A HEAT ADVISORY will be in effect this afternoon for the Hampton Roads cities from Noon – 7PM. This means that heat indices will hover around 105° (or hotter) for a few hours.
This type of heat can make you sick if you’re not careful; so, practice heat safety tips today. This heat is due to a prevailing southwesterly wind ushering in very warm and muggy air.
Plus, an upper level ridge of high pressure (or heat dome) is also adding to our hot pattern (due to the air sinking, compressing, and warming up). The upper high will move away a bit by Friday and Saturday, and (at the surface) a cold front will move into our area.
So, it’ll get a little cooler leading into the weekend. However, as of today, it looks like the front may not actually cross our area. If this happens, the SW wind will remain…keeping temps a bit hotter than what we expected yesterday AND less rainy. So, stay tuned. Regardless, the next day or so will be very hot.
