ATLANTIC OCEAN (WAVY) — Hurricane Florence has strengthened out over the Atlantic, becoming the first major hurricane of 2018.

Florence became the third hurricane of the year Tuesday.

The National Hurricane Center said Florence’s maximum winds had increased to more than 130 mph — making the storm a Category 4 hurricane. The storm was about 1,160 miles east northeast of the northern Leeward Islands on Wednesday, moving northwest at 13 mph.

Florence is expected to continue moving in this direction through Wednesday night, before turning to the west northwest with decreased speed.

By early next week, Florence is expected to turn back to the northwest.

The hurricane center said although some weakening could be possible, Florence is expected to remain a strong storm through the early parts of next week.
