Like a relative that is just passing through, old man Winter decided to show up…for one day. I would say old man Fall, but that just doesn’t sound right. Let me back up for a second. Yesterday we did get some clearing in the afternoon, and temperatures bounced up into the upper 70s. In fact…Norfolk broke another record. We made it to 79 degrees which broke the old record of 77 set back in 2003.
Then… the temperature dropped fast in the eveing. According to the National Weather Service, the temperature in Norfolk at 4:50pm was about 77 degrees. By 5:50pm the temperature had fallen to 53 degrees. Wow! I saw meteorologist Don Slater talk about it while I was making dinner (Thursday night is frozen pizza and salad night btw). ((frozen pizza isn’t what it used to be!)) Anyway, the cold front slowly sank to the south, and folks noticed the big change in Hampton, Norfolk, and Virginia Beach.
The cold front will stall out to our south today. Most of us will be in a colder pocket through the day. We were definitely in the cooler pocket this morning.
We had clouds, fog, and drizzle this morning. This will probably continue through at least midday. During the afternoon we’ll have a bit of clearing over North Carolina and near the Virginia State line. The front will start lifting north as a warm front. This will create a big split in temps. We will likely rise to the upper 60s to near 70 over inland North Carolina (ie Hertford). The Hampton Roads metro will rise to the upper 50s to low 60s. Then we’ll only make it to the mid 50s on the Eastern Shore and Northern Neck. Maybe even in the low 50s. Most of our winds will be from the north/northeast at 5-10mph. The wind will be variable over North Carolina. We will have some clearing this afternoon, but it will be late. It will start out over North Carolina, and will creep north with the warm front. Some folks won’t get much clearing until the early evening.
By tomorrow we’ll be back in the warm zone as the warm front moves well to our north again. Temps will rise to the upper 70s. We may have a few 80s inland and south. We’ll have a mix of sun and clouds with some isolated rain showers in the afternoon.
The chance for showers is a little higher from about Yorktown to Cape Charles and points northward. Winds will be out of the southwest.
We’ll be warm again on Sunday. High temps will be right back up in the upper 70s to near 80 degrees. However, we’ll have increasing clouds and there will be some scattered showers later in the day. A cold front will move into the area by the evening. this will put an end to the super warm temperatures for a while. High temps next week will be mainly in the 60s. It won’t be cold, but it will be closer to average.
