This morning some areas started off with snow, especially inland- Suffolk, Isle of Wight, Franklin, Southampton and Gates County, NC. The ground is warmer than the air so even though it was cold enough to snow, it wasn’t sticking to the roadways. Mainly just grassy surfaces. Other areas along the coast didn’t even see a flake! It was rain the entire time.
This system was bringing a lot of moisture from the south and that allowed for extremely high snow totals to our neighboring areas. Asheville, NC saw snow rates of 2 inches/ hour! This is causing a wintry nightmare for many areas but the good news for us is that this will mainly be a rain event from here on out. The rain/ snow line continues to push father to the NW which means any areas that are seeing a few flurries, that will change over to rain throughout the rest of the day.
The other concern with this system is the wind gusts. As northerly wind continues to increase throughout the day, we’ll see wind gusts later along the coast up to 45 MPH. Hold onto your hat! This could cause downed trees, power lines and power outages.
The good news is this system moves out early Monday and we’ll be in the clear for the majority of the work week before rain moves back in for Friday. Stay inside and stay warm! -Meteorologist Casey Lehecka
