We were watching a backdoor cold front since yesterday. A backdoor cold front is one that is coming from an unusual direction, in this case its coming directly from the north versus the west or northwest. The issue we had this morning was how was was it really going to get and when was that front going to move in to the area. Temperatures did warm up to 69 degrees in Norfolk earlier, but as of midday, reading are much colder.
As we look ahead to our afternoon, we should see more sunshine which should help many areas climb into the mid 70s, but the wind speeds may not be strong enough for Norfolk and parts of Virginia Beach. Thick, low level clouds are also going keep us cool today.
Wind speeds will also be all over the place. If we had stronger winds from the south, we could overtake the cold air, but it doesn’t look likely that that will happen today. So depending on where you area, you might want to bring a jacket with you.
