Ocean Lakes baseball honors Virginia Beach, advances to state semifinals

VIRGINIA BEACH (WAVY) – A community still grieving from its worst massacre in history had a reason to cheer at Ocean Lakes High School on Tuesday night.

The Ocean Lakes baseball team defeated Colonial Forge 2-0 and advanced to the school’s first state semifinal matchup since coach Pete Zell took over the program. “What a great crowd, what a great community,” said Zell after the win.

Showing love and support for Virginia Beach, the team hung a banner in left field which read #VBStrong.

It was only fitting, the only score of the game came courtesy of junior Scott Hinds, who sailed a two-run home run down the third base line, just to the right of the sign in left field.

“We keep that (#VBStrong) in the back of our head,” said Hinds. “We’re playing hard for Virginia Beach.”

The Dolphins, two wins from a state championship, will play Westfield in the Class 6 semifinals Friday morning at 10:00 am. “Even if (winning a state title) affects a couple people, we’re just trying to be a bright spot in the light of what’s happened,” said senior pitcher Micah Singer.
