VIRGINIA BEACH (WAVY) – In the last decade, there’s the University of Alabama football team, which has won five of the last 10 national championships. There are the New England Patriots, who have won three of the last five Super Bowls, and the Golden State Warriors, who have won three of the last four NBA titles.
In Virginia Beach, there’s the Virginia Wesleyan University softball team.
Over the last two seasons, the Marlins have won back-to-back national champions, and both seasons, broke the Division III record for wins in a season, winning 54 games in 2017, and 55 games last season.
“We want people to want to be like us,” said Wesleyan head coach Brandon Elliott, who’s Marlins are again ranked no. 1 in the nation and are the favorites to take this year’s title.
“It really never gets old,” said All-American pitcher Hanna Hull.
Elliott has indeede built a dynasty in Virginia Beach, and one that looks to become just the second program in Division III history to win the national championship three years in a row.
“Certainly it passes your mind,” said Elliott. “You know how fortunate you are to win back-to-back, and to go three in a row would be just ridiculous and incredible.”
The Marlins third straight title defense begins Friday, 4:30 against Scranton at home.
