NORFOLK (WAVY) – As a three-time WNBA All-Star, and a two-time Olympic Gold Medalist, Nikki McCray knows something about winning.

Only nine games into her second season as the head women’s basketball coach at Old Dominion, McCray has the Lady Monarchs (7-2) back on a winning track.

“We have kids in here who are very competitive, they’re young, and fearless,” said McCray, who’s team is off to its best start since the 2012-2013 campaign.

Her team earned an overtime road win at Cincinnati, and their only losses have come against Atlantic Coast Conference foes- at 13th-ranked North Carolina State and at home against Virginia.

“We have what it takes,” said junior guard Taylor Edwards. “Not everyone sees it right now, but we know what it takes to get there.”

Edwards, a Portsmouth native and a graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School, is the third-leading scorer on the team (12.6 points per game), and her 5.6 assists per night ranks second-best in Conference USA.

“Coach (McCray) puts pressure on us. She knows what we can do,” said Edwards.
