NORFOLK (WAVY) – For much of the early part of the college baseball season, it looked like Old Dominion was doomed to miss the Conference USA Tournament for a second straight season.
The Monarchs started out losing eight of their first nine conference games. “We certainly didn’t pitch well enough, and didn’t get any timely hits,” said Monarchs head coach Chris Finwood. “It was something we talked about; somebody’s got to step up and drive runs in.”
His team responded, and has since won 14 of the last 18 conference games. With a 15-1 win over Western Kentucky on Thursday night, ODU not only won its sixth straight conference game, they also qualified for next week’s Conference USA Tournament in Biloxi, Mississippi.
Leading the charge at the plate has been junior first baseman Vinnie Pasquantio, who’s 15 home runs this year are just five short of the all-time single season record.
