YORK COUNTY, Va. (WAVY) — A local woman is collecting prom dresses for girls who might not be able to afford one.
Prom night is a rite of passage for many high school students.
Nakeya Green used to volunteer with a prom dress giveaway group in Norfolk. When she moved to York County, she saw a need and started “Queen in a Dress.”
“It’s the one day that a young lady can feel like they are the queen of the night,” said Green. However, the cost of dresses, shoes, jewelry and makeup can start to add up. That’s why Green started her prom dress giveaway event.
“I want her to understand that prom is not the end of her dreams, it’s only the beginning,” said Green.
Green’s goal is to collect dresses for every girl who needs one. However, the giveaway is not just about the dress, shoes and jewelry. It’s about hope.
“I had one young lady tell me that she didn’t want to live anymore because she was tired of not being able to accomplish what her peers are accomplishing and that was just simple dance,” Green said.
She’s charging $10 for a dress and shoes. The money covers the cost of the storage fees. With the dress and shoes, girls will also get a book.
“Motivational books, the entrepreneur books, anything that can give you the encouragement to keep on track for the right path,” Green said.
Two graduating seniors will also receive $500 college scholarships.
Green hopes this will make a positive impact on the girls she meets.
“When you think that things are bleak and it turns out that you can put on a gown and be with your peers and blend in like everybody else, it gives you the spark,” Green said.
