HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) — Police have made an arrest in a homicide case after a woman was found shot in a car in the area of Nickerson Boulevard and Fox Hill Road on Sunday.
Hampton police say they were originally called to the intersection to respond to a crash involving three vehicles around 3:30 p.m.
When they arrived to the crash scene, they discovered a woman in one of the vehicles had been shot. The victim, 41-year-old Tarnecia Shevon Smith, of Hampton, was pronounced dead at the scene.
42-year-old Samuel Anthony Ashe, of Winston, North Carolina was identified as the suspect. On Monday night, Hampton police announced he had been taken into custody after he turned himself in to authorities in North Carolina. He’s been charged with one count of second-degree murder, one count of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, one count of shooting within an occupied vehicle and one count of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
Police say he was in the vehicle with Smith, but fled before officers arrived.
Traffic was delayed in the area of Nickerson Boulevard and Fox Hill Road as Dominion Energy as crews repaired a downed power line. Officials did not confirm if the crash had anything to do with the downed power line and outages.
