NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — A woman is facing charges after police say she drove while impaired with two children in car in Newport News over the weekend.

Newport News police said 29-year-old Tenita Boykins is charged with driving while impaired and two counts of child abuse for an incident that happened Sunday, March 3.

Police said an officer spotted Boykins swerving and speeding near Harpersville Road and Jefferson Avenue just before 1:30 a.m. The officer reportedly saw Boykins hit the curb twice.

After stopping Boykins, police said the officer saw a baby and a 5-year-old sleeping in the backseat of the vehicle. An odor of alcohol was detected from the vehicle, and police said Boykins’ speech was slurred.

Boykins was arrested and charged after she underwent a field sobriety test, police said.

Another family member responded to the scene to take the children.
