Residents wake up to snow, icy roads

WAVY News - HAMPTON ROADS, Va. (WAVY) - Residents across Hampton Roads woke up to snow, sleet and icy roads after a winter storm passed through the area overnight.

A winter storm watch was issued Sunday and upgraded to a warning early Monday morning. The winter storm warning was in effect until noon Tuesday, and a winter weather advisory was in effect for Dare County, N.C. until 4 p.m.

Most cities across Hampton Roads picked up 4-7" of snow overnight. Around 1 a.m. Tuesday, the snow started to transition over to a mix of sleet and freezing rain. The storm pulled out of the area by the afternoon.

It left behind, icy, slushy streets, and many schools and organizations planned delays or closings for Wednesday. HRT bus services will continue to run on normal schedules, but users should expect delays.

Latest closings and delays

Governors in both Virginia and North Carolina declared states of emergency ahead of Monday's winter storm. The Virginia National Guard was also authorized to bring 300 personnel into state active duty to help with the severe weather response operations.

Hampton also declared a local state of emergency, as of 10 p.m. Monday.
