Williamsburg mother charged in infant’s death enters plea

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (WAVY) — A Williamsburg mother accused in the death of her infant son is expected to be sentenced next February after entering a plea this week.

Juana Iriselda Escobar-Portillo entered an Alford plea for a voluntary manslaughter charge — meaning she acknowledges there is enough evidence for a likely conviction, but does not admit guilt.

A charge of child abuse: serious injury was nolle prossed, or withdrawn.

According to the Williamsburg Police Department, on Sept. 29, 2017, officers responded to a medical call involving an infant at a home on North Vernon Avenue. The child, Escobar-Portillo’s son, died from his injuries five days later.
