Where to cool off from the sweltering conditions

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory for Hampton Roads and surrounding areas as heat indices are expected to be over 100 degrees.

If you need a place to escape the heat today, cities across Hampton Roads have opened cooling centers as a place for residents to relax in an air conditioned space. 

This list will be updated as more centers are opened.

James City County

The county announced Wednesday that two locations could be used as a cooling centers. Except for service animals, pets are not allowed.

Norfolk
Resident can stop by any City of Norfolk Recreation Center or the city’s Public Libraries today to cool off from the heat.

Crews will also be passing out water to those in need around the city today

Portsmouth
Cooling stations were “activated” Wednesday at all Portsmouth public libraries today, along with several other locations:
