WAVY viewers help Norfolk homeowner with water damage

Less than three weeks after 10 On Your Side told you about Melvin Johnson’s bathroom water damage – and his insurance company’s unwillingness to cover it — Palm Coast Remodeling is on the job.

“I got to tell you something — you really got the ball started,” said homeowner Melvin Johnson.

“We saw the story,” said company owner Charles Abatsis, “and we figured that was something we could handle.”

The contractor is donating the work, and is trying to convince Allstate to reconsider its denial of the claim.

Allstate said the water damage was too old to cover, and the contractor appealed on behalf of Johnson.

Abatsis says the appeal is still in limbo. “We just decided to get on the job to give him his bathroom and his life back basically, being 80 years old.”

“When they showed up, it was like a blessing in disguise,” Johnson said.

Johnson and his wife will get about $6,000 worth of repairs and remodeling.

But someone else saw the story and gave Johnson an anonymous donation of $800.

“She called and told me that she would send me a check, and she did.”

Three weeks ago, Johnson was worried about expensive repairs. Now he’s marveling at the generosity of strangers.

“It just amazes me about people.”

Johnson says he’d heard of people being helped by others in the past – but never thought he and his wife would be the recipients.

Palm Coast Remodeling says the work should be complete by the end of next week.
