Watch out for scammers amid Hurricane Florence relief, BBB warns

News

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — The Better Business Bureau wants to warn you about scammers waiting to prey on your generosity.

As North and South Carolina rebuild from Hurricane Florence, Hampton Roads residents want to help.

The BBB’s Wise Giving Alliance says experienced disaster relief organizations are your best bet.

They also suggest you ask what activities your donation will fund.

The BBB has seen crowdfunding posts from individuals claiming to raise funds so they can deliver and distribute water, food and flashlights to impacted areas.

Even if it’s sincere, the BBB says such efforts may risk lives, get in the way of professional efforts and possibly even divert donations that could be used in more helpful ways.

For tips on avoiding questionable appeals, as well as a list of national BBB Accredited Charities go to Give.org.
