NEW KENT COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — Authorities say a Hopewell man drowned in New Kent County over Memorial Day weekend.
The New Kent County Sheriff’s Office says the 37-year-old man was out on a boat with his family and friends on the Chickahominy Lake on Saturday when he went swimming with others, but was unable to make it back to the boat.
Family members tried to reach him but were unable to do so.
Authorities were notified at 3:55 p.m. and initiated the search at 4:10 p.m. Several additional law enforcement agencies and rescue crews were on the scene assisting with the search.
The man’s body was recovered the following morning at 10:10. His identity has not yet been released.
His body was taken to the Chief Medical Examiner’s Office in Richmond.
The sheriff’s office says they are working the case as an accidental drowning.
