NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — A fennec fox at the Virginia Zoo has passed away.

Zoo officials announced the death of Ghibli in a Facebook post on Monday. The post said keepers and vet staff decided to humanely euthanize Ghibli because of his “rapidly declining quality of life from liver issues.”

At 13 years-old, the zoo said Ghibli was a geriatric for his species.

According to the Smithsonian’s National Zoo, the fennec fox is native to desert and arid regions of Africa and Arabia. The animals are known for their extraordinarily large ears, which help them hunt at night.
