BLACKSBURG (WAVY) – Virginia Tech has found the successor to Buzz Williams, and has announced Mike Young as its new head men’s basketball coach.
Young, 55, is a Radford native, and spent the previous 17 seasons as head coach at Wofford, which finished with a 30-5 record, and a perfect 18-0 mark in the Southern Conference. The Terriors also upset Seton Hall in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
“We are fortunate to have been able to recruit Mike Young to Virginia Tech, not only because of his proven leadership and coaching ability, but because Coach Young is home in Southwest Virginia and leads his life in the true Hokie tradition of integrity and commitment to
service,” Virginia Tech President Dr. Tim Sands said in a statement. “I look forward to the excitement and success we will enjoy as Coach Young and his student-athletes hit the court and compete to win.”
The school is expected to formally introduce Young at a news conference Monday at 11:00 am.
