MEXICO BEACH, Fl. (WAVY) — A group of first responders from Hampton Roads is busy helping with recovery efforts in Florida following Hurricane Michael.
It’s been a busy week for the 16 members of Virginia Task Force 2. The team has been walking the streets of Jackson County, Florida checking out more than 1,500 homes and buildings.
Crew members have found hundreds of people who chose to ride out the storm despite warnings to leave. Along with wellness checks, the team is also helping clear debris from some of the hardest hit areas.
Capt. Jon Rigolow of the Virginia Beach Fire Department said they are in areas that are still without power — nearly a week after the storm made landfall near Mexico Beach.
Members of the task force two have helped out with hurricanes Katrina, Sandy, and Matthew in the past.
