VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — A Virginia Beach man will serve 25 years in prison for the sexual abuse of a young child over the course of a year.

Anthony Dwayne August, 27, pleaded guilty on Tuesday on charges of forcible sodomy – victim under age 13 and custodial indecent liberties, and was sentenced to 75 years with 50 years suspended. The case was prosecuted by Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney C. Andrew Rice.

According to a release from the Virginia Beach Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office, the sentence is roughly twice the high-end recommendation for Virginia state sentencing guidelines.

Prosecutors say they had evidence to prove that August sexually abused the child, who was known to him and under the age of 13, from December 1, 2016, to December 31, 2017. The victim reported the abuse to a trusted family member shortly after the period of abuse, according to the attorney’s office, and August later admitted to the abuse during an interview with detectives.

In addition to pleading guilty, August also wrote two apologize letters to the victim, according to attorney’s office.
