Veteran and his family gifted mortgage-free home in Newport News

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — Retired Army Staff Sergeant Joshua Howe and his family of seven recieved the gift of a home on Saturday.

A home that’s mortgage-free, thanks to the partnership between SunTrust and the Military Warriors Support Foundation.

“I really don’t have words for that. Its not something you can prepare for in life. It was amazing,” said Howe.

Howe served as an infantryman in Iraq. “I was injured. I lost vision in my right eye and, 12 surgeries later, I’m still able to walk and work, so I’m happy for that,” said Howe.

He says he applied to the Military Warriors Support Foundation about two years ago, and can’t believe the home is now his family’s.

Howe, his wife and their four girls and two twin boys are excited to make this house their home.

While the inside of the home is filled with many new, beautiful items donated by the community, Howe says the best part was seeing his family’s reaction.

“Honestly, seeing my family happy. Obviously the house is awesome and everything inside is awesome, but sometimes I feel they deserve it more than I do, so seeing them happy is good by me,” he said.
