VDOT treating area roads ahead of possible winter weather

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — VDOT crews are treating area roadways ahead of a system that could bring a mix of rain, sleet and snow to parts of the region this weekend.

The transportation agency said in a news release pretreatment of roads started Thursday, Jan. 10, and is expected to be completed Friday afternoon.

Trucks have been spreading brine along the interstate highways to prevent ice on the roads.

VDOT said there is nearly 25,000 tons of salt and more than 15,000 tons of sand in stock for snow and ice removal in Hampton Roads.

Meteorologist Jeremy Wheeler said in his Friday morning weather blog rain is expected to develop across Hampton Roads through Saturday night into Sunday morning, with a wintry mix inland and north.

Super Doppler 10’s future trak model shows the rain/snow line further south than the GFS and European models, which shows it sitting more to the northwest.
