GATES COUNTY, N.C. (WAVY) – Paramedics took 12 people to the hospital after a van transporting several inmates overturned in Gates County, N.C. Sunday. At least one inmate suffered serious injuries.
The van was owned by US Corrections, LLC, a private company that transports inmates.
North Carolina Highway Patrol confirmed the woman driving the van fell asleep at the wheel and ran off Highway 13 near 158 Sunday morning. She woke up, realized they were in a ditch and overcorrected. The van flipped over on the other side of the highway.
The vehicle was headed to Vanceboro, N.C. from Carrsville, Va. in Isle of Wight County. That’s about a 2-hour drive.
The driver and another correctional officer suffered minor injuries. Paramedics also took two female and eight male inmates to the hospital.
Police charged the driver with reckless driving.
