VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — The City of Virginia Beach has hit pause on dredging at Rudee Inlet at the Oceanfront.

According to a city official, work will begin again after Labor Day.

Crews had to bury the discharge pipe because of events on the beach. A dredger from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers was in the last week for several days.

Officials say they want to make sure the inlet is deep enough for larger boats to access the ocean.

The emergency dredging started earlier this summer in a shoaled area outside the inlet.
