Va. Beach house damaged in fire for second time in 2018

News

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) —  A Virginia Beach house undergoing renovations from a January blaze was again damaged in a fire Friday morning, officials say.

Firefighters were called to the scene on Goolagong Drive, in the Level Green section of the city, around 7:20 a.m. after neighbors called dispatch.

Officials with the Virginia Beach Fire Department said responding units reported finding heavy smoke and flames “shooting through the upstairs windows” and roof.

The fire was marked under control just before 7:50 a.m., but officials said the entire second floor of the house was heavily damaged and badly burned.

No one was home at the time of the fire, and no firefighters or neighbors were hurt, officials said.

Officials confirmed the house had previously caught fire in January and was undergoing renovations at the time of Friday’s fire. A family of eight was displaced in the January fire — the cause of which was undetermined.

Officials close Level Green Boulevard to traffic from Connors Drive to Goolagong Drive following Friday’s fire. Smoke from the fire could be seen just above a tree line off Interstate 64.

Video from a WAVY viewer showed the house engulfed in flames.

Investigators are working to determine what may have caused the Friday morning fire.
