The Commonwealth’s top two FBS programs found out their postseason destinations on Sunday evening. Virginia, who’s headed to a second straight bowl game for the first time in 13 years, will face South Carolina in the Belk Bowl.
Virginia Tech, who found a way to extend their bowl streak to 26 straight seasons, will play Cincinnati in the Military Bowl. The same two programs squared off in the same bowl game four years ago, with the Hokies claiming a 33-17 win.
The Cavaliers (7-5) finished the season with consecutive overtime losses against Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech, respectively. The Hokies (6-6), meanwhile, looked as if they were headed home for the holidays, trailing rival Virginia by four with less than four minutes to play in Blacksburg.
Tech rallied for a miraculous 34-31 win in overtime, which earned them a conditional game against Marshall on Saturday. The Hokies easily prevailed 41-20, snapping the Thundering Herd’s three-game win streak, and keeping their coveted bowl streak alive.
