NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — Two women were stopped at an intersection Thursday night when they were hit with crossfire during a drive-by shooting.
Newport News police say they were called to the intersection of 9th Street and Ivy Avenue after a report of property damage from gunshots around 8:30 p.m. The individual who called police told officers the gunshots were aimed at people.
A short time later, police were notified that were two shooting victims in the emergency room at a local hospital. Both of the victims are women in their early 20s and had injuries that were not considered life-threatening.
The victims told police they were in a car at the intersection when another car driving southbound on Ivy Avenue began shooting at two men standing on the corner.
The two men standing on the corner began firing back at the car driving by, according to the victims’ statement to police. During the gunfire, one of the women was shot in the shoulder and the other woman had lacerations on her face from the broken glass of their windshield after a bullet went through it.
