Two Chincoteague ponies die after getting stuck in mud

Wild Island Orchid and foal

CHINCOTEAGUE ISLAND, Va. (WAVY) — Two of the famous Chincoteague Island ponies have died after getting stuck in the mud on Sunday.

The Chincoteague Volunteer Fire officials said in a Facebook post that the “saltwater cowboys” found the pony “Wild Island Orchid” dead at the scene and was given a proper burial. Two other ponies, “Surf Queen” and “Randy,” were also stuck in the mud, but were rescued.

Surf Queen and Randy were taken to the carnival grounds to be treated by a veterinarian. Each pony was given an IV bag and wrapped in blankets and monitored.

Sadly, fire officials reported Monday morning that Surf Queen passed away.  They said Randy is doing well.

Meanwhile, the cowboys also discovered a newborn foal stuck in some brush. They freed the coal, who found its mom and started nursing.
