JAMESVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) – A nail was to blame for a tire blowout that killed an ECU student in an accident that occurred in Martin County Tuesday morning, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

The Highway Patrol said it happened around 10 a.m. south of Jamesville on N.C. 171 South.

Troopers said Mariah V. Moore, 22, of Manns Harbor, was headed north when her tire blew out.

A trooper said a nail was discovered in the tire and said she had been driving on it for a considerable amount of time.

Moore overcorrected and crossed over the center line, hitting another car head-on, troopers said.

Troopers said Moore died from her injuries.

There was one person in the other car but the extent of their injuries is not known.

A friend confirmed to 9 On Your Side that Moore worked for Foxy Flamingo Boutique located in Nags Head.

Her coworker said she was a friend to everyone who came in the store.

“That’s just how Mariah was she didn’t know a stranger she was just so nice and friendly and hardworking passionate, its just crazy and she was just like such a great person,” said Sydney Sheldon, employee, Foxy Flamingo Boutique, Nags Head.

According to East Carolina University, Moore was studying University Studies with a minor in merchandising.
