PORTMSOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — A mother charged in the death of a newborn infant is now set to go on trial in July.
A grand jury on Thursday indicted Donita Hawkins for a second-degree murder charge. Hawkins was charged in January 2017.
Police said Hawkins claimed she had smoked crack cocaine, then woke up to labor pains the following morning. According to court records, Hawkins went to the hospital, and handed doctors a bag that contained an unresponsive newborn child.
The baby was pronounced dead at the hospital.
A two-day jury trial for Hawkins is scheduled to start July 11.
