Tractor-trailer drives over Jersey wall, leaks fuel on I-664 in Newport News

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — A tractor-trailer drove over a Jersey wall on I-664 in Newport News on Monday night, rupturing its belly tank and spilling around 200 gallons of fuel on the roadway. 

Police say the crash happened around 6:20 p.m. at mile marker 3 in the area of Chestnut and Roanoke avenues.

Police say the driver of the tractor-trailer, Richard A. Groves, of Manassas, Virginia, attempted to avoid hitting another vehicle, when he locked up his brakes. He then struck a Nissan Altima in the rear before running off the road and hitting the Jersey wall. The tractor-trailer then jackknifed in the southbound lanes of I-664. 

Groves wasn’t injured and the driver of the Nissan suffered non life-threatening injuries.

Groves was charged with reckless driving, police say.
