TIME-LAPSE: New Goliath gantry crane lifted at Newport News Shipbuilding

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) – The Newport News skyline just changed. Over the weekend, the shipyard lifted part of its new crane into place.

Workers lifted the girders of the new 315-metric-ton Goliath gantry crane on Saturday, August 4.

The new crane is 241 feet tall and will replace the the shipyard’s 49-year-old green Goliath gantry crane at dry docks 10 and 11. The new crane is blue and resembles the 1,050-ton crane in the North Yard, which is fondly known as ‘Big Blue.’

Huntington Ingalls released a cool time-lapse of it being lifted.

Once it is fully operational next year, the crane should help workers as they build bigger and more advanced ships in the future.
