Thousands lose power across the region during snowfall

HAMPTON ROADS, Va. (WAVY) — Thousands of customers lost power Monday night amid a surprising snowfall across the region, according to Dominion Energy Virginia.

The outages mainly hit Chesapeake (as many as 5,000 at one point), Norfolk (2,000-plus at one point), Newport News (1,800), Hampton (500-plus) and Suffolk (nearly 1,500), with clusters of outages in James City County, York County and Virginia Beach. Nearly 12,000 people were without power at the peak of the outages.

Dominion workers have 100-plus projects on the Southside, with dozens more on the Peninsula.

More than 160 customers near Zuni in Isle of Wight County, more than 40 in Gloucester County and roughly 30 customers in the Kill Devil Hills area were also without power.

The outages were down to about 1,700 early Tuesday morning.
