SUFFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – A customer in a Suffolk doughnut shop did more than just buy doughnuts Wednesday morning.
He dipped his hand into a tip jar meant for employees and walked out with the cash — and it was all caught on camera.
The crime happened right after the morning rush at O’doodleDoo’s Donuts on Bridge Road.
“It makes me really mad,” said employee Flora Davis. “I was really upset.”
Davis was just finishing the morning rush when a man and woman came into the store. She got them some tasty treats, but when she turned her back, the unthinkable took place.
“He got his dozen doughnuts and then he goes and grabs some napkins,” Davis added. “Then he puts the other hand in the tip jar and takes it out and then puts it in his pocket.”
The man left with probably $5 or $10 meant for the employees. It’s not a lot of cash, but it’s worth much more.
“The tips really add up and they mean a lot to us,” Davis said. “The fact that someone would just come in and take them is heartbreaking.”
No one knows if the suspect knew he was on camera.
“He’s probably going to be shocked and he probably feels slightly silly,” Davis added.
As police look for the suspect, word of the theft has spread on social media. One customer stopped by and dropped off a $100 bill for the staff.
“The response from people has been so heartwarming and lovely,” Davis said. “Him taking it doesn’t really matter anymore.”
