Teen who shot VB officer’s dog went to home to scare romantic rival, prosecution says

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — A Virginia Beach judge has ruled 17-year-old Dashaun Robinson can be tried as an adult. He’s accused of breaking into a Virginia Beach officer’s home and shooting his dog.

“It can happen to anybody,” said officer Jerome Scurry.

Even officers at times can be the victims of crime. Scurry found that out first-hand in December.

“It’s surreal having to come to court for this,” Scurry added.

Scurry lives with his family and teenage cousin on Gravenhurst Drive.

Prosecutors say that on December 17, Robinson was upset that Scurry’s cousin was talking to his girlfriend. According to court paperwork, Robinson wanted to “teach the teen a lesson.”

Prosecutors told the judge Robinson, his girlfriend and 18-year-old Lundon Starke went to the Gravenhurst home. When the teenager wouldn’t come out, prosecutors say Stake and Robinson kicked in the front door. They both had guns.

Scurry was upstairs and grabbed his service weapon to see what was happening.

“I really just was reacting and going into protect mode,” Scurry said. “I wasn’t thinking a whole lot.”

Scurry was headed in that direction, but that’s when his pit bull Zulu took off downstairs and chased Starke and Robinson out of the house. Prosecutors say Robinson shot Zulu. The dog needed surgery but is making a full recovery.

“He’s doing good,” Scurry added. “He’s bouncing back to normal. He’s a strong dog.”

Prosecutors told the judge Robinson admitted shooting Zulu and said he went to the home to put a gun to the teenage boy’s head to scare him away from his girlfriend.

The judge ruled Robinson should be tried as an adult.

“The circumstances and the reason why was really so small, it’s just ridiculous,” Scurry said.

Prosecutors says Robinson’s girlfriend is also facing some charges.

Robinson is being held in juvenile detention without bond. Pete Imbrogno, his attorney, plans to appeal the judge’s ruling.
