NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — A man is facing charges after a domestic situation turned into a standoff Wednesday night in Newport News.
It happened in the 600 block of Stoney Creek Lane near Denbigh and Jefferson Ave.
The standoff ended peacefully and no one was seriously hurt.
Police said they got a call for a domestic assault around 6:45 p.m. When officers got on scene, they found a 21-year-old woman outside with a child.
The woman told officers she had been assaulted by a 24-year-old man who she knew.
Police said the man was inside one of the apartments with another child and refused to come out.
The SWAT team and negotiators were called out to the scene and after a couple of hours, the man eventually came out on his own. He was taken into custody without incident.
Police said the man, 24-year-old Demetrius Lishawn Stallings, was charged with two counts of misdemeanor assault, abduction, burglary, grand larceny and larceny.
The other child was not harmed.
Police Chief Steve Drew said, “I could not be more impressed with citizen’s interaction, the patrolman who responded to set the scene to make it secure and set it up within a matter of minutes. Then the SWAT team; we had all our resources here. the fire department, the medics. Everybody played a key role.”
