Dakota Kape Whitt

SURRY COUNTY, N.C. (WAVY/WNCN) — Authorities in North Carolina are searching for a 22-year-old suspect after a North Carolina State Highway Patrol trooper was killed Monday night during a pursuit in Surry County.

Dakota Kape Whitt, of Elkin, North Carolina, is wanted on charges of murder, felony fleeing to elude arrest in a motor vehicle and driving with a revoked license.

Officials say Trooper Samuel Newton Bullard, 24, was killed when his vehicle ran off the right side of the road and crashed into a bridge support.

Bullard, a three-year veteran with highway patrol, was assigned to Surry County and was from Wilkes County.

The crash happened just before 11 p.m. on Interstate 77 southbound near mile marker 80. Officials say started when Whitt drove through a vehicle checkpoint in a black BMW sedan. Another trooper was also in pursuit, but ended the 3-minute chase after realizing Bullard had crashed.

The BMW was found after an extensive search, and the registered owner was identified as Cheyenne Harrison.

Anyone with information related to locating Whitt is encouraged to contact the State Highway Patrol Communications Center at (704) 855-1047.
