NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — A Newport News man could be facing several charges following a chase on the Peninsula Friday morning, state police say.

Virginia State Police said in a news release troopers were called to assist Newport News police with a chase that went onto I-64 West at Mercury Boulevard just before 2:15 a.m.

State police said the initial reason for the chase was driving under the influence.

Troopers tried to contain and stop the 2011 Hyundai 4 door at mile marker 243 in York County during the chase. State police said the driver lost control while trying to stop, bounced off a guardrail and hit a state vehicle.

No troopers were injured in the chase, according to state police.

The suspect, 38-year-old Antoine Mandrell Branch, of Newport News, was taken to Riverside Regional Medical Center with minor injuries before being transported to Newport News City Jail.

Several felony charges are pending by Virginia State Police and the Newport News Police Department.
