Suspect arrested in stabbing death of university student in New Jersey

MONTCLAIR, N.J. (AP) — Authorities have announced the arrest of a suspect in the stabbing death of a New Jersey university student.

The Essex County prosecutor’s office said 21-year-old Ahighah Broomes of Orange, New Jersey is charged in the Friday morning slaying of 20-year-old Akirah Townes in Montclair.

Authorities said the two had been in a relationship at some point. They said Townes, a Kean University student, was trying to leave on a trip to Virginia Beach when she was stabbed shortly after 6 a.m. Friday near the Bay Street train station.

Broomes, who turned himself in as detectives were searching for him, is charged with murder and weapons counts. He was taken to the Essex County Correctional Facility; a listed number for him couldn’t’ be found and it’s unclear whether he has an attorney.
