VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — People packed the oceanfront this weekend for the 15th Annual Steel Pier Surf Classic and Art Expo.
The weekend event combines a surfing competition with an art show, taking place all weekend long.
“We saw a need that, for this event, not just surfing but art and community coming together to kind of just like bring everyone together,” said Morgan Knight, who is the director of the student art show.
75 artists from near and far set up shop on the Virginia Beach boardwalk, sharing not only their art, but also their friendship.
Local artist Reba McConnell said, “The people that we work with and the people that we meet. I mean we’re not out here to not meet people.”
This Memorial Day Weekend, the organizers know its not just about art and surfing, it’s also about commemorating those who served and gave the ultimate sacrifice. That is why they are holding a “paddle out” Monday at noon.
“We all paddle out into the ocean and form a circle and we say some prayers and share some stories about local heroes in our military because without them, we wouldn’t be here today celebrating our freedom,” said Knight.
