SUFFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — A Suffolk father is charged with child abuse and neglect after police say his young son was found alone.

Suffolk police said a called received shortly after midnight on May 27 from someone reporting that there was a child in the road.

Officers responded to the 400 block of Boat Street, near Peanut Park, and found a 2-year-old boy crying in a driveway. The child was reportedly wearing only a diaper, but was uninjured.

Police said it was determined the child’s father was supposed to be watching him, but had left the home. Child Protective Services was called, and a family member took custody of the child.

Deomari Volante Beamon, 19, was arrested four days later.

Police said they did not know how long the child was left alone.
