PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — Virginia State Police responded to an accident on I-264 westbound near the Effingham Street exit shortly before 2 a.m. Saturday morning.

According to state police spokeswoman Sergeant Michelle Anaya, a 2002 Ford F-350 was traveling at a high rate of speed and struck a jersey wall.

The driver, 42-year-old David Lindsey Watson of Chesapeake, lost control and ran off the roadway, causing the vehicle to overturn and eject the driver, according to Anaya.

Troopers say Watson was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident and died at the scene.

Although the investigation is ongoing, Anaya says that speed and alcohol are considered factors in the crash.
