NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — Virginia State Police troopers responded to six crashes on one stretch of Interstate 64 in Newport News last Saturday.

State police Sgt. Michelle Anaya said the crashes all happened on a three-mile stretch around Fort Eustis Boulevard — and were all reported between 8:50 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.

The first crash was at 8:54 a.m., and involved five vehicles. Injuries in that crash were considered not life-threatening.

Three children were hurt in a crash around 9:30 a.m. on I-64 West at Fort Eustis Boulevard. Three vehicles were involved in the crash.

Sgt. Anaya said the crash shut down both sides of the interstate so that a medevac helicopter could land and take the children to a hospital. She said there were life-threatening injuries reported.

The other four crashes involved a total of 11 vehicles — but only vehicle and property damage was reported.
