CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) — Diesel fuel was spilled on Interstate 64 in Chesapeake following a crash involving two tractor-trailers late Wednesday morning, Virginia State Police say.
All eastbound lanes were closed just before the High Rise Bridge and past the Interstate 464 interchange following the crash. The crash happened just before 11 a.m., according to state police.
The Virginia Department of Transportation set up a detour for traffic and opened a shoulder lane for drivers to get by the scene. All eastbound lanes were reopened more than two and a half hours after the crash.
State police said a preliminary investigation found the driver of a tractor-trailer made an unsafe lane change, which caused it to be pushed into an impact attenuator (or crash cushion).
The driver, Christopher Osbey, of Laurel, Maryland, has been charged with unsafe lane change.
Osbey’s tractor-trailer sustained significant damage and lost “a large amount of diesel fuel”, according to state police.
