Southside storms cause thousands to lose power, flooding

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — A strong storm system that materialized right over the Southside Thursday afternoon brought power outages and flooding in its wake.

A flood advisory has been issued and the storm has crept west over the Berkley and Campostella areas of Norfolk, and Chesapeake and Portsmouth.

As of 4 p.m., more than 5,000 people were without power between Chesapeake and Virginia Beach. That went down to 3,700 out at 4:12 p.m.

The storm system popped up right around I-264 in the Hilltop area of Virginia Beach. At the Hilltop shopping center on Laskin Road, floodwater rose halfway up the tires on one viewer’s car.

A photo from WAVY viewer Katy Carter shows a tree on fire at First Landing State Parking after it was struck by lightning.

Chief Meteorologist Don Slater is tracking this system on air.
