PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — Police say charges are pending in connection with a double shooting on Monday afternoon outside the Effingham Street YMCA.
Dispatchers received a call about the shooting at 3:09 p.m. When officers arrived, they found two men shot in the parking lot.
Terri Reedy, a spokeswoman with YMCA of South Hampton Roads, says police were called after the two got into a physical altercation.
One man was shot in the torso and has life-threatening injuries. The other victim was shot in the arm and should recover, according to police.
Detectives say the two victims know each other and the case appears to be an isolated incident. No one inside the building was injured.

The YMCA released the following statement:
This afternoon, at 3:07 p.m., two adults engaged in a physical altercation in the parking lot of the Effingham Street Family YMCA. The YMCA of South Hampton Roads is fully cooperating with the police department’s investigation of the incident. Police responded within minutes of the incident, and the YMCA followed emergency procedures and was immediately placed on lockdown to ensure the safety of all children, members and staff.”
