NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — A vehicle accident and fire caused delays Tuesday afternoon on the northbound lanes of the James River Bridge in Newport News, while a separate crash closed one southbound lane.
At 4:09 p.m., Carrollton Volunteer Fire Department and Isle of Wight Emergency Services were dispatched to the car fire on the northbound side of the James River Bridge. During the response, units were advised there was an explosion, which occurred after a collision.
Units arrived on scene and found one vehicle fully involved. The occupants of both vehicles were able to get out safely on their own.
Firefighters from Newport News and Smithfield and Virginia State Police also assisted on scene.
A few minutes later, crews responded to a three-vehicle crash at Carrollton Blvd. and Brewers Neck Blvd. that blocked the southbound lanes of the James River Bridge. Dispatchers say at least one person was taken to the hospital with minor injuries in this crash.
