SUFFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Sentara Healthcare says it is planning to build a new hospital at its BelleHarbour campus Suffolk

The planned four-story, 92,000 square foot hospital would include 24 beds for inpatients, two operating rooms and a CT scanner. It is the latest expansion at the BelleHarbour campus.

Sentara opened a 24-hour free-standing emergency department in 2008. Sentara broke ground in May 2017 on a second building with an ambulatory surgery center — which is slated to open later this year.

In the long-term, Sentara says it wants to add more buildings and a parking deck.

Steve Julian, MD, the president of Sentara Obici Hospital, cited growing need for the expansion in Suffolk without having to transfer facilities.

The company has filed a letter the Virginia Department of Health, asking for a Certificate of Public need for the facility.

Health officials will decide on the plan following public hearings, before the Commissioner of Health has a vote. Sentara is hoping for approval by the end of 2018.
